Hunting Collection and Dormouse Museum

Dormouse hunting was certainly present in the forests of Inner Carniola as early as the 13th century. Dormice were hunted for their meat, which enriched the meagre meals of the population. Dormouse fat was considered a universal remedy in traditional folk medicine, while dormouse skins were dried and tanned to be sold as prized fur. The most characteristic product is the ‘polhovka’, a recognisable winter hat made of dormouse fur. Nowadays, hunting is permitted with special permits during the month of October.

The Dormouse Museum and the Hunting Collection have been on display in the outbuilding of Snežnik Castle since 1980. The museum presents the characteristics of the edible dormouse and the development and tradition of dormouse hunting as a unique local ethnological heritage, while the hunting collection displays trophies of indigenous wildlife species.
