The karst of Inner Carniola (Notranjska) offers extraordinary possibilities for hiking. This is a geologically versatile land with extensive pastures, fields and lush forests, full of the karst phenomena along with natural and cultural sights.
Martin Krpan is the local hero from Fran Levstik's novel with the same title. He defeated the turkish tough guy, Brdavs, and saved imperial Vienna from its enemy. As if in contempt of the authorities, he smuggled salt illegaly along the path, up to this date named after him.
Only a part of the path crosses the Lož valley. It is 91 kilometres long altogether. It starts at the railway station in Pivka and ends at the railway station in Postojna and it is well marked. Hike over Javorniki has to be well planned, though, as it is 16 km long and will take you 4-5 hours.
